What To Eat While On Qsymia

When starting a weight loss diet while taking Qsymia, it can be difficult to know where to start. Your health care provider can help you get started with a general outline.

There are many diets out there and there are some you need to stay away from. The first two weeks are crucial so you need to follow a diet very carefully.

The general idea is to maximize foods that are good for weight loss and minimize foods that cause weight gain. This is good because this makes meal planning easy. Basically you’re looking at something similar to an Atkins diet which means high protein, high fiber and low carbohydrate foods. Couldn’t get simpler than that. It’s all about the right food choices.

Foods that contain a lot of sugar actually increase your appetite, so you want to eliminate those. Just think about a glaze doughnut. It is high in fat and sugar. You eat one and you want another one. Eating a lot of sugar makes you want more sugar. So you need to stay away from high sugar foods. Foods that make you feel full and are satisfying include various protein sources and veggies. Veggies are very important as they are high in fiber and antioxidants and low in sugar. The fiber tends to fill you up and slows down digestion keeping you feeling full longer. You can have some bread but only if it is whole wheat and contains 2 grams of sugar or less per slice. Ideally, you need to stay below 13 grams of sugar per day for the first two weeks. After that point, you can gradually add in complex carb foods slowly. You’ll need to check your weight daily and see where you begin to gain weight. Once you have established that, you’ll know how many carbs you need to cut back to maintain constant weight. It’s a little bit of trial and error and it is different for everyone.

It’s also important to know that you need to eat to lose weight on Phentermine. Don’t skip meals. Skipping a meal(s) puts your body in starvation mode which causes your body to hold on to weight for survival. Your brain sets you average weight and tries to maintain that at all times. At this point, you’re trying to lose weight so you’re trying to reset your average weight in the brain (hypothalamus) to a lower weight. Skipping meals creates a yo-yo effect which is confusing to your body and brain and no weight loss will occur. Basically, you’re looking at a 500 to 800 Calorie reduction daily. So, you need to take in at least 1200 Calories to 1500 Calories each day to lose weight. And, remember stay away from sugary foods.

General Diet When Taking Qsymia

  • Drink lots of water – this drug tends to create dry mouth so you need to keep yourself well hydrated. This is important for metabolic processes and elimination of waste material as well. Some people experience constipation with Qsymia. Drinking a lot of water helps to avoid this issue. It is recommended that you drink 8 – 8 ounce glasses a day.
  • Protein – very important for every cell in the body and particularly the brain and skeletal muscle. Low protein consumption slows down brain function. Moreover, high protein foods take more to digest, metabolize and use. That means you burn more calories processing protein. If you are exercising and building lean muscle, you need to take in more protein. If you don’t, you’ll start burning protein in your own muscle. You have a wide range of protein sources to mix and match such as fish, lean skinless chicken and turkey, lean beef (8 percent fat or less), eggs (range-free), nuts and low-fat dairy. Try some yogurt and cottage cheese. Make sure the yogurt is low sugar. Some of them have 33 gm of sugar per serving. Look for unflavored yogurt or fruit yogurts with 6-7 gm of sugar. For breakfast you could have a hard boiled egg, 1 slice of whole wheat toast (pat of butter) and one yogurt.
  • Veggies and fiber – veggies contain high concentrations of water, fiber and antioxidants. This is a way of adding volume to your meals without all those calories. You need to stay away from fruits your first two weeks. Fruits contain a lot of sugar some of which is in the form of fructose. Too much fructose runs your metabolism amok. After the two week period you can gradually add fruit. For really powerful antioxidants, choose berries. All kinds of berries such as raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, pineapple (it’s a berry), goose berries, acai, strawberries, cranberries and the list goes on. Their bright colors tell you they are full of antioxidants. Eat the whole fruit and stay away from juice.

If you feel like Qsymia is too much for you, try Obilean supplement and lose the weight just as well as on prescription medicine.

Best Way To Exercise While On Qsymia

If you’re looking for even more rapid weight loss then just diet and Qsymia, try adding cardio and weight-bearing exercises. These exercises are best done at the gym. Gym memberships don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Look for $10 a month dues and no sign up cost. These gyms are cropping up all over the place.

They usually have a coach available for free when you sign up who can show you how to use the equipment. They can also help you set up a simple fitness plan. Nevertheless, I’d like to go through some of the machines you should use from the beginning and the parts of the body they are good for.

At the moment it is not easy to get a prescription for Qsymia. You must find a trained and certified Qsymia physician. Only certified Qsymia physicians can write prescriptions. To find a doctor and pharmacy near you, go to Qsymia website.

If you’re new too the gym, try to go at least 3 times a week and for at least an hour each day. It’ s important to do just the right amount of cardio and strength so that they complement each other. The idea is to build lean muscle and not worry so much about how many calories you are burning. Divide your time equally between cardio and strength and choose the right machines to target your weight loss to all areas of the body which makes workouts efficient. With the energy boost that Qsymia gives you, you should have no problem completing your exercise routine. So, let’s take a look at cardio machines and upper and lower body machines.

Cardio Machines

Try to do 45 minutes of intense cardio on one of the 3 days and use as many cardio machines as you can. On the other two days do15 minutes on each of the other two days of fast-paced cycling before you switch over to weights for 45 minutes.

  • Treadmill – the old standby and a great place to start if you’re new to the gym scene. Simply start by walking and gradually work up to a fast paced power walk. You can stop there if you like but for those of you who can jog, so be it. I just do a fast walk and walk a little longer. You can still burn quite a few calories with a fast walk. Do for 15 minutes on cardio day.
  • Indoor cycling – This is my favorite because it so low impact and yet you can still burn a fair amount of calories. This not only burns calories but boosts endurance and improves your circulation. Try alternating between slow cycling set with high resistance and then fast cycling with low resistance. Do for 15 minutes on cardio day.
  • Elliptical trainer – this provides a full cardio workout because you’re using both your legs and arms. Since you’re changing directions, you get to work many different muscles while you’re burning a lot of calories. Do for 15 minutes on cardio day.

Upper Body Machines

These machines will help to build lean muscle by toning your arms, strengthening your shoulders and tightening your abdomen. You will be converting fat into muscle and creating a nice shape for yourself. The more muscle you build the more calories you will burn even after you stop your exercises. More muscle increases your metabolic rate so you continue to burn calories the rest of the day meaning you lose even more weight.

  • Overhead Press – starts with you standing erect with a weight bar (free weight) on your shoulders. Press the bar over your head until your elbows are locked. Lower the bar to your shoulders and repeat. Do 5 sets of 5 presses. You’ll have to determine the weight you want to start with.
  • Abdominal crunch – Use the Chair machine because it is more comfortable. This will help burn some belly fat and tone your abs. This machine puts less pressure on your neck and back as opposed to doing sit-ups on the floor. I don’t like to do anything on the floor. I do 2 sets of 50 repetitions with 30 pounds of weight.
  • Lat pull-down – this is good for biceps, shoulders and neck. This overhead bar is pulled down in front of you and works wonders for the entire torso. Start out with 5 sets of 5 pull-downs. You need to determine the weight you want to start with.

Lower Body Machines

Lower body machines help to strengthen larger muscles in your glutes and quads. You’ll really burn some calories here and create lean legs and a toned butt.

  • Seated leg press – this will not only help sculpt your legs and butt but your abdomen as well. The machine makes this exercise easy to do. You simply sit in a chair and push a plate with your legs. As a female, I usually work with 130 pounds of weight and that works well for me. I usually do 10 sets of 20 reps.
  • Leg abductor – this works the outer thighs and glutes. I usually work at 55 pounds and do 5 sets of 20 reps on this one.

Best Way To Lose Weight On Qsymia

The Qsymia weight loss program will help you get rid of the extra pounds now and forever. This dietary plan is not for people who are 10 to 20 pounds overweight but rather for individuals who need to lose 30, 50 or 100 pounds or more who have tried everything else and failed. Please note that Qsymia is based on Phentermine HCL with Topiramate and available on sale by prescription only.

It is for those who have considered drastic actions such as gastric bypass surgery. Research has revealed the powerful forces that tell you when to eat and when not to eat. These forces can easily overwhelm the normal control mechanisms of obese individuals.

It was once thought that a lack of willpower in certain individuals was to blame for their obesity. In other words, lack of willpower was a psychological weakness. It is now known that the biochemistry of obese individuals is different from people who are thin. Overweight individuals lack the normal internal signals to stop eating. They are either missing these chemicals or they are not responding to them properly. So, they end up eating the wrong foods and/or eating too much.

The Qsymia diet plan is based on maximizing the effects of the drug by reducing foods and drinks that cause hunger and increase foods that produce fullness. Foods that cause hunger are full of carbs (sugars) and foods that produce fullness include: protein, fruits, veggies, and a few low glycemic index carbs.

During the first weeks on the Qsymia diet, most carbohydrates are restricted. You are allowed small amounts of rye or whole wheat breads. Things like rice, pasta, potatoes and sugars are kept to a minimum for 14 days. You are allowed to have these 2 to 3 times a week in small amounts. Stay away from watermelon, bananas, pineapple, mangoes and all dried fruits during this period of time.

First Two Week Food Elimination

  • No high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, molasses, honey, sucrose, dextrose, sugar.
  • No pasta, white rice, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, can have rye or whole wheat bread (1 slice a day, possibly two).
  • No fast food restaurants except salads.
  • No trans fats and that includes hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.

You’re probably expecting to see daily meal plans and specialty foods that require special shopping and cooking. Not here. You should eat what you like and what you’re used to but you need to eliminate 1 or two items that will interfere with weight loss and weight management. Keeping your diet changes to a minimum is the key to success. If you are in doubt, calories and ease of portion are priority one over any other issue. It doesn’t matter if you’re at home, school, sports event or yoga class, there are always good food and drink alternatives that you can enjoy.

Research indicates that children and adults alike are more successful with weight loss if they have something to eat for breakfast. It’s all about metabolism and about control and making better choices throughout the day. You need protein. So, for the first 7 days, you can have no cereal but you can have rye, whole wheat or reduced carb bread (1 slice).

Good Breakfast Hints

  • Keep it small and light.
  • Eat foods that are served cold. These tend to be low in calorie and are easily portioned out.
  • If you work in doors all day, you’d be hard pressed to eat two large meals in a day without gaining weight and over time, a lot of weight.
  • Eating a small lunch means there will only be one large meal a day, dinner. You could reverse this if you like. Have a larger lunch and small dinner.
  • Lunch choices include low cal sandwiches and various wraps that are whole wheat or rye/pumpernickel. They are easy to portion. Stay away from high calorie and sugary side dishes. Italian subs are great but you need to wait two weeks for those.
  • Don’t skip lunch, don’t eat fast food, no pieces of fried chicken/fish, no pasta or potatoes or pizza.

Good Dinner Hints

  • Eat 4 to 6 ounces of fish, especially salmon, tuna or mackerel, from this you get high protein and omega-3s, other proteins sources include lean beef, chicken or pork.
  • Lots of veggies and steam them, broccoli, green beans cauliflower, mixed veggies, carrots, zucchini, yellow neck squash, asparagus, green salads with no tomatoes.
  • Can have small portion of wild rice or a slice of whole wheat bread. Small amounts of wild rice can be laced into the veggies.

There are no real set meal plans here but rather remove bad foods and drinks and eat what you like (except for the bad stuff) in sensible portions and don’t skip any meals. You need to drink a lot of water every day. It is recommended to drink eight-8 ounce glasses and you can drink tea (no coffee) hot or cold with no added sugar. Within two weeks, you’ll be able to add in a number of fruits and complex carbs but you still need to limit it.

Qsymia Side Effects

Qsymia is a weight loss prescription drug that is made up of immediate-release Phentermine and extended-release Topiramate. Phentermine is an appetite suppressant which makes you eat less.

This helps you to take in fewer calories every day which helps you to lose weight. Topiramate is a seizure drug (anticonvulsant) that helps you to feel full also helping you to eat less. Qsymia is used in conjunction with a low calorie diet and exercise as a chronic weight management program for obese individuals.

Depending on you body mass index (BMI), Qsymia is prescribed differently to be determined by your doctor. Generally, treatment starts with Qsymia (3.75 mg Phentermine and 23 mg Topiramate) daily for 14 days. Then the dose is increased to Qsymia 7.5 mg/46 mg once a day. Then, initial weight loss is determined 12 weeks (3 months) after the starting point.

Below is a list of possible Qsymia side effects and this is by no means a complete list so other symptoms are possible so keep that in mind.

Qsymia Side Effects

  • Allergic reactions – you may be allergic to the ingredients in Qsymia including dyes, fillers, binders and the drugs themselves. Symptoms include: rash (hives), difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. You need to get immediate medical help – emergency room.
  • Pregnancy – if you become pregnant while taking Qsymia, stop taking it and contact your doctor immediately. Qsymia can potentially harm your fetus. Birth defects such a cleft palate have been observed in trials
  • Heart complications – this drug can cause pounding heartbeats and/or a fluttering feeling in your chest.
  • Mood changes – it can cause depression and/or thoughts of suicide.
  • Brain dysfunction – lack of focus, concentration and attention. Problems with finding the right words for speech, confused thinking.
  • Visual disturbances – eye pain, seeing halos around light sources, blurred vision.
  • Low blood sugar – as an appetite suppressor you eat less and have fewer nutrients and sugar for your body to work with. This can cause hunger, weakness, headache, sweating, confusion, irritability, dizziness and/or fast heart rate.
  • Kidney/bladder problems – red or pink urine and possibly severe lower back pain. Very thirsty or hot, unable to urinate, sweating or hot and dry skin.
  • Potassium loss – low levels of potassium may occur causing confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, muscle weakness or leg discomfort.
  • High blood pressure – causing severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, chest pain, confusion, shortness of breath and possible seizure.
  • Mouth issues – altered sense of taste, unpleasant taste in your mouth and/or dry mouth.
  • Digestive issues – constipation due to dehydration. Make sure to keep well hydrated by drinking a lot of water. Hot or cold tea is good as well but don’t add sugar to it.
  • Sleep disturbances – insomnia, sleepiness during the day.

What Is Topiramate And Why It Is In Qsymia

Topiramate also known as Topamax is classified as an anticonvulsant (seizures) prescription drug that is mainly used as an epilepsy therapy. It is also approved for migraine therapy and as an adjunct to Phentermine for weight loss. Off-label uses include therapy for bipolar and borderline personality disorders and weight loss.

Even though Topiramate has been demonstrated to reduce the prevalence of seizures, the underlying mechanism is not well understood. Some researchers think that Topiramate alters voltage-gated sodium channels as well as calcium channels. Others think that it may affect GABA receptors, AMPA receptors and carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes.

No matter how Topiramate works, a number of individuals have been prescribed this drug and had success in losing weight. However, it is not approved as a standalone drug for weight loss. It is approved for weight loss when coupled with Phentermine as in Qsymia.

Possible Weight loss Mechanisms For Topiramate

  • Addiction Centers – this drug may be targeting addiction centers of the brain. It has been observed that patients that previously looked for pleasure-inducing substances such as food, alcohol and drugs no longer did so when taking Topiramate. It may inhibit overexcited neurons in this region bringing back balance.
  • Appetite suppression – patients experience a loss in appetite as a side effect of this drug. Recall, it is an anticonvulsant. Some believe that Topiramate is interacting with the rewards centers of the brain altering the way rewards are processed. This may lead to patients feeling less hungry.
  • Hormonal changes – Some feel that it may be altering hormone levels such as cortisol and leptin. Leptin is known as the satiety hormone (tells you to stop eating because you are full). It is made by fat cells that help regulate energy balance by inhibiting hunger. Leptin is opposed by the actions of the hormone ghrelin. Ghrelin is known as the hunger hormone. Together they regulate appetite. In obesity, there is a decreased sensitivity to leptin such that they have an inability to detect satiety even though they have high energy (fat) stores.
  • Confusion – patients have reported that they feel disoriented on Topiramate and that they have trouble remembering to eat. This drug does have a potent effect on memory making some people feel dizzy and confused.
  • Ketosis – it is believed that Topiramate affects levels of blood glucose and insulin possibly leading to ketosis. Ketosis is a state where the body uses its own fat to make energy allowing for incredible weight loss. Low carb diets such as Atkins do this. So, it may be that Topiramate may artificially induce ketosis.
  • Taste Alterations – patients report a loss of pleasurable taste. So, people eat smaller portions because the food just isn’t that tasty (interesting). Some patients have reported bad tastes on this drug. Saliva – this drug causes a reduction in saliva production. This in itself can cause poorer taste sensation which generally reduces appetite which leads to weight loss.
