Losing Weight

Increasingly, Doctors are Prescribing Phentermine for Gastric Bypass Pre-Op

For anyone undergoing surgery, it is extremely important to maintain the utmost health and follow all of your doctor’s instructions. To reduce the risks of gastric bypass surgery, doctors often ask patients to go on diets and lose weight as part of pre-operating procedures.

More and more doctors are now seeing the benefits of FDA-approved diet drugs like Phentermine, and are even prescribing it to patients as part of their pre-operating directions in order to help minimize risks during surgery.

Losing weight pre-op is often a catch-22 for patients who have already had difficulty losing weight through traditional methods. Their doctors are looking for them to improve their diets, exercise and lose weight before the procedure, yet their lack of results with these traditional methods is the very reason they are opting to have surgery in the first place. This is when so many doctors are finally incorporating the proven weight loss pill, Phentermine, into their prescription plans.

However, for some conservative doctors, it is the stigma of weight-loss pills that is difficult for them to overcome, and not the safety or efficiency which have been proven over and over. An article in the New Yorker, equated other doctor’s hesitancy with prescribing weight loss pills that proven to be effective with their former position on mental health treatments: that someone patients did not require medical treatment.

The doctor who authored the article, Dr. Suzanne Koven, lamented this mindset back in 2013 and hoped that one day she would be able to better treat patients looking to lose weight. Hopefully, that day has come.

Why it is Important to Diet Before Gastric Bypass Surgery

You’re probably wondering why doctors tell patients to lose weight before a gastric bypass when the entire point of the surgery is mainly to lose weight. No, your doctor is not testing your weight-loss abilities. It all comes down to ensuring your safety.

If you aren’t scheduled for a gastric bypass and are wondering what exactly this surgery is, here’s a quick overview: Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure to aid in permanent weight loss by dividing the stomach into two sections to reduce its size to less than 90 percent of what it previously was.

It is a risky procedure that is only used in cases of obesity, as a last resort when no other options have worked. It is an extremely effective weight loss option for many patients who see dramatic results and increase their life-spans in the long-term.

The reason doctors are so adamant about their diet instructions before the procedure is that the surgery has been proven to be much more successful for patients who have managed to lose some weight prior to the operation.

Often doctors prescribe a liquid diet to help empty out the stomach and prevent any disorders. It is recommended that those in pre-op abstain from eating for 48 hours prior to their surgery. This helps prevent any leftover food particles from increasing the chance of leakage that can occur during the stapling part of the procedure.

If the liver is enlarged during surgery, it could prevent the surgeons from continuing with the procedure until more weight is lost. The surgeon needs to be able to access the breastbone to perform the procedure laparoscopically, which results in the greatest success with an easier recovery period.

How Phentermine Can Help with Pre-Op Procedures

For those who suffer from stress eating, the looming days before surgery can be a trigger. Prescription diet medication can significantly improve weight loss when patient experience slowing results from more traditionally recommended methods. These weight-loss medicines work by increasing the basal metabolic rate and decreases a patient’s appetite.

The appetite suppressing properties of Phentermine are psycho-stimulants that are powerful in overcoming stress eating habits. This medication can help you reduce hunger cravings such as this, which is important in limiting your diet prior to your gastric bypass operation.

When left without a prescription to Phentermine, many often falter to these stress-eating habits and find it very difficult to stick to the suggested liquid diet regime. Phentermine releases hormones like norepinephrine and epinephrine that release adrenaline that produces energy and help break down fat cells.

A prescription of Phentermine combined with dietary recommendations and exercise that doctors routinely suggest as a part of pre-op procedures for a gastric bypass can be a powerful tool in preventing weight gain. This can also benefit your recovery time, as the physiological impact of Phentermine can counteract depression that is often associated with surgeries. Depression is particularly common in elective surgeries like gastric bypass.

Why Phentermine is the Preferred Prescribed Medicine

Phentermine is the preferred appetite suppressant that is prescribed by doctors for bariatric surgery like gastric bypasses. This is because it is one of the most effective weight-loss medications on the market, with the least amount of side effects. It is also FDA approved to be used for 12 weeks, which makes it a prime candidate for pre-op prescriptions.

The normal dosage ranges from 15 to 37.5 mg for a day and has been proven to boost metabolism and reduce hunger. It also has been proven to have no long-term side effects. In a study that measured patients who abruptly ended use of Phentermine, no patients exhibited any withdrawals or addictions to the drug.

In addition to its many benefits for pre-operating processes, Phentermine also helps boost energy level post-surgery to combat potential lingering side effects from the anesthesia or the procedure in general. It has been shown to be effective at managing long-term weight loss, especially for those struggling to lose weight through traditional methods.

For those with a history of failing to lose weight, this is the best weight loss pill on the market. It helps patients keep weight off, struggle less with post-operating recovery, and prevents uncontrollable hunger cravings. Phentermine continues to be a safe option for patients undergoing surgery, as well as those looking to supplement their weight-loss efforts.

Phentramin-D Review

According to its manufacturers, Phentramin-D is a non-herbal dietary supplement that has been scientifically developed to help you eat less, burn more fat, and lose weight. Phentramin is clearly meant to be a play on words, as its spelling is very close to that of the prescription-only medication Phentermine. Does Phentramin-D live up to it’s claims? We’ll take an in-depth look at the product in this review.

Phentramin D Purpose

Phentramin-D is intended to help users lose weight by suppressing their appetite and boosting their metabolism, thereby allowing them to burn more fat. According to the product’s official website, Phentramin-D is designed to mimic the effects of the prescription medication Phentermine, without the the unpopular side effects.

Who Makes Phentramin-D?

Phentramin-D is manufactured by Lazarus Labs, a supplement manufacturing company that has been operating since 2003. They are currently located in Cartersville, GA. This company also goes by the name of Lazarus Enterprises, Inc.

How To Take Phentramin-D

Phentramin-D is taken twice per day. The first pill should be taken 20 minutes before breakfast, with eight ounces of water. The second should be taken 20 minutes before lunch, or in the early afternoon also with eight ounces of water. The manufacturer states that this product should not be taken in the evening or close to bedtime.

Concerns

There are a number of concerns regarding Phentramin-D. The manufacturers offer no information regarding how the product is made, and there is no evidence that the supplement is made in an FDA-certified facility. This means that the product is not necessarily made with the Good Manufacturing Practices in mind.

While there is a 30-day guarantee offered for products purchased from the Lazarus Labs website, the 30-day period begins from day of order. As oftentimes shipping can take 7-10 business days from the date of order, this doesn’t leave consumers long to test the products and request a refund. There is also a $10.95 non-refundable processing fee on each refund that is issued, meaning you will not receive the full price of your purchase back should you be unsatisfied with their product.

The ingredients in Phentramin D can cause serious health problems for certain groups of people. The manufacturer states that those with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, any cardiovascular problems, hyperthyroidism, or anyone who is taking any prescription medications should not use this product. This supplement could possibly interact with their medications, make their conditions worse, or result in dangerous side effects.

Phentramin D Ingredients

Phentramin-D is made with a proprietary blend consisting mainly of nootropics and hydrochlorides. These substances are designed to trick your body into burning more fat while simultaneously suppressing your appetite. However, many hydrochlorides come with nasty side effects that can be harmful.

2-Phenylethylamine Hydrochloride (PEA) – PEA is a neruomodulator that is responsible for releasing both dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. It is often used in antidepressants and in medications. Because PEA can provide a rise in both blood pressure and blood glucose levels, it’s believed that taking this supplement can increase the metabolism. However, in some people taking PEA as a supplement has been known to cause too-high blood pressure, as well as a feeling of nervousness and anxiety. In addition, because this ingredient causes the release of dopamine and norepinephrine, it is possible to become addicted to it.

1,3.7 trimethylxanthine – this is a more scientific-sounding word for caffeine. This is a stimulant designed to help you feel more alert and energetic. Caffeine can raise your heart rate, which leads many people to believe that it also provides a boost to your metabolism. However, for many people taking caffeine can lead to unpleasant side effects such as nervousness, insomnia, diarrhea, restlessness, and stomach upset.

Hordenine Hydrochloride – hordenine hydrochloride is another stimulant that is used as an appetite suppressant and energy booster. It’s a natural phenethylamine compound that is believed to aid the body in burning fat more effectively. Unfortunately, this ingredient also has a number of unpleasant side effects, including dizziness, restlessness, increased heart rate, anxiety, mood changes, high blood pressure and stomach upset.

Synephrine Hydrochloride – this compound is better known as bitter orange. Its effects are similar to those experienced when taking ephedrine, though not as potent. This naturally-occurring ingredient can help boost metabolism and stimulate fat loss, however when used in conjunction with caffeine it has been known to have dangerous and even deadly side effects. Because both stimulants can raise the heart rate, it is possible for the blood pressure to become dangerously high in some individuals, resulting in heart attack or stroke.

Yohimbine Hydrochloride – Yohimbine is often used as a fat burning compound in popular dietary supplements. However, this ingredient is known to cause anxiety and can interfere or cause adverse reactions when used alongside many prescription medications. In order to be effective, yohimbine must be consumed on an empty stomach, as eating food negates any fat burning effects that it may have.

Positives

Although this supplement does contain ingredients that may assist in weight loss, it is difficult to list them as positives. This is simply due to the fact that so few people can benefit from them.

Negatives

This supplement can be used safely by only a very few people. For the rest, the side effects and interactions cause by the hydrochlorides in Phentramin-D can have disastrous results.

Customer Reviews

2 Stars Reviews Phentramin D Review
2 stars - "Phentramin-D is not available on Amazon, which in itself is a huge red flag. However, we did find this product available on eBay, though there were only two reviews. The first stated that Phentramine-D was a great product with a good price, however the second labeled it as “disappointing,” and said that it failed to live up to its promises. This gives the product a 50% success rate at best." Based on 300,784 Votes since 2016!

Verdict –  Rejected

We cannot in good conscience recommend a product that could cause problems in so many different ways, especially one that has been banned by a major online retailer such as Amazon. Unfortunately the combination of side effects along with the fact that the guarantee is extremely limited (if purchased through eBay only unopened bottles can be returned) leads us to believe that the negatives associated with Phentramin-D simply aren’t worth the minor positive effects that you may experience when taking it. Non-stimulant CLA supplement will give you better weight loss results.

Obesity can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and even death. This drug comes along with many severe side effects, so doctors will weigh the risks of a person’s obesity against the risks that come along with this drug to determine if someone is a good candidate for this prescription.

As with all other medications that contain Phentermine Hydrochloride, this drug is prescribed along with major lifestyle changes. These changes include a significant reduction in the number of calories that a patient is consuming each day. It also involves a significant increase in exercise. You should be exercising at least five days per week while on this medication, so long as your doctor says this is safe for you. Keep in mind, exercising can even be just walking. Your doctor will be able to give you expert guidance on the lifestyle changes that you need to make and determine what is safe for you as an individual.

What is the Main Ingredient in Adipex-P?

As mentioned above, the main ingredient in Adipex-P is Phentermine Hydrochloride. This chemical is used as an appetite suppressant for individuals who need to lose a significant amount of weight. One common use of this drug is for individuals who want to undergo a gastric bypass surgery but whose weight makes them unable to be a candidate for this procedure. Can I get Adipex-P Over the Counter?

You can not get Adipex over the counter. This drug is sold by prescription only to be filled through a registered pharmacy. If you find a company online that is selling this drug “over the counter,” please beware. This is illegal and may not be true Adipex-P or Phentermine Hydrochloride. We will discuss this in further detail at the end of this article.

How Does Adipex-P Work and is There a Difference Between this Drug and Phentermine?

Adipex-P (Phentermine Hydrochloride) is a stimulant that helps to suppress appetite. It is a brand name form of the chemical, Phentermine Hydrochloride. The only differences in these two medications is that “Phentermine” is the generic form of the brand name drugs that contain this ingredient. Inactive ingredients may differ slightly, as well. Phentermine, which is the main ingredient in Adipex, is a schedule IV drug that is also a sympathomimetic amine anorectic. It affects the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine. This, in turn, has an effect on the hypothalamus, which helps to regulate appetite. This “tells” our brain that we feel more full and satisfied than we actually may be. This is a common effect of stimulant medications.

What Does Adipex-P Have in It?

As mentioned above, Adipex-P contains Phentermine Hydrochloride as its active ingredient. The following is a list of the inactive ingredients that are in this prescription medication:

  • Black Iron Oxide
  • Corn Starch
  • D&C Red # 33
  • FD&C Blue # 1
  • Gelatin
  • Lactose Monohydrate
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Shellac
  • Titanium Dioxide

If any of these inactive ingredients concern you, speak with your doctor about the other drugs that contain Phentermine Hydrochloride to see if there may be a better option for you.

How do you Take Adipex-P?

Adipex-P is an oral medication that is taken daily either an hour before breakfast or one to two hours after it. It is not recommended to take this medication for ten to fourteen hours before you plan on trying to fall asleep as it can disturb ability to get to sleep and to stay asleep. This medication is taken alongside significant lifestyle changes that include reducing the number of calories you consume daily as well as increasing the amount you exercise. You should exercise at least five days a week while taking this medication, so long as your doctor has approved this. Some individuals may need to start a bit smaller and work their way up to working out daily.

Remember that you should always keep in communication with your doctor while taking this medication. You should be monitoring your side effects and if any change or worsen, then you should communicate this with your doctor. Certain side effects like those that affect your heart and/or breathing warrant a complete halt of taking this medication. In these cases, you should also seek medical treatment immediately. If your doctor is not available, you should go to the Emergency Room if you are having significant changes in heart rate or difficulty breathing.

Where to Buy Adipex-P Without a Prescription

Please note that any website marketing Adipex-P without a doctor’s prescription is running and illegal and dangerous “business.” It is illegal for you to purchase, possess, or distribute this drug unless you have a prescription (in the case of purchasing and/or possessing) or unless you are a doctor or pharmacy (in the case of distribution). You not only run the risk of legal trouble, but you also endanger your health and safety if you attempt to take Adipex-P without a prescription after illegally purchasing this drug.

Individuals and entities that market these kinds of drugs online without a prescription are in a dirty business and, often times, they are not even selling what they claim to be selling. These pills could contain harmful and even deadly chemicals. You have no way of knowing what you are actually getting and an ingredient could be unsafe for you or for mixing with any other medications or supplements that you may be taking. Protect yourself, your health, and your life. It is just not worth it to engage in such a dangerous activity. You can’t lose weight if you are dead.

There are so many medications and supplements on the market today that are geared towards weight loss. Which one should you choose? Which ones are most effective? How easy is it to get these pills? Many people are interested in taking the drug known as Phentermine Hydrochloride, but there are actually quite a few other options on the market. Let’s discuss some of the various weight loss medications that do not contain Phentermine.

Pondimin

This is an anorectic that contains Fenfluramine. Since this ingredient has been known to cause life-threatening heart conditions, this drug has been taken off the market in the United States. Does not contain any non stimulants similar to CLA supplements. Unfortunately, if you are interested in this drug for weight loss, there is simply nothing you can do. You should speak with your doctor about other options for medications that help with weight loss.

Tenuate

Users of this drug have compared it to Phentermine and have reported good results with use. Just like Phentermine, this weight loss drug is available only by a doctor’s prescription, and patients must reduce their daily caloric intake and increase their physical activity if they want to see results. Unlike with the traditional 37.5 mg dose of Phentermine, which is taken in the morning, Tenuate is usually taken three times per day about an hour before a meal. This is to help with appetite suppression and help the patient to keep portions small in order to lose weight and aid in fat burning.

Xenical

This is another prescription weight loss medication that you can only get with a prescription. It is prescribed alongside a reduction in daily caloric intake, an increase in exercise, and an overall change in lifestyle and daily behaviors. This medication can help to boost weight loss as well as help to prevent gaining the weight back after it has been lost. It is often prescribed to individuals who are considered obese and who have other medical issues as a result of their weight. Obesity can cause a plethora of life-threatening conditions, and for this reason, doctors are willing to prescribe heavier drugs that have more side effects in order to save a life.

Alli

Alli or Orlistat is an over the counter medication that is used to help people lose weight as well as to maintain a healthy weight once their goal has been reached. While it is sold over the counter, it is still recommended to take this weight loss drug under the direct supervision of a doctor. It is recommended for adults only, and just as with any other medication for losing weight, it is to be taken with lifestyle changes that include fewer calories in a day and more exercise regularly.

Belviq

Belviq is a brand name version of the drug, Lorcaserin HCL. This is another prescription only medication that only a doctor or nurse practitioner can prescribe. This particular medication is usually taken twice daily, unlike with Phentermine Hydrochloride, which is usually taken once per day in the morning. It does not come along with some of the harsher side effects that Phentermine does, and it shouldn’t affect sleep nearly as much. Many people who have trouble sleeping on Phentermine have tried this weight loss drug as an alternative.

Bontril PDM

This is another brand name weight loss drug. It’s generic form is Phendimetrazine Tartrate. It is available by prescription only, and you guessed it! You must decrease your daily caloric intake and increase your daily physical activity if you want to have success with this drug. This is the case for every pill that is aimed towards losing weight. You have to put in the work and dedication if you are serious about getting your weight and your health in check.

Desoxyn

This medication is a form of methamphetamine. It is traditionally used in the treatment of ADHD but has also been used for weight loss. Being in the class of amphetamines, this medication can come along with many side effects just like Phentermine Hydrochloride. This medication should only be used under the supervision of a doctor or nurse practitioner.

Didrex (Benzphetamine)

Didrex is a brand name form of Benzphetamine. This drug is used for weight loss along with a doctor recommended diet plan. It is available by prescription only, so if you are interested in this drug, then you should make an appointment with your doctor.

Diethylpropion

This is a brand name form of the drug, Amfepramone. It is a stimulant and only available by prescription as with many of the other drugs listed in this article. It is used to suppress appetite and is only for short term use, similar to Phentermine Hydrochloride.

Meridia (Sibutramine)

Meridia is a brand name form of Sibutramine. This drug is an oral anorectic but has been off the market in the United States since 2010. Just as with the other medications, it was generally only prescribed to individuals who are obese and whose weight poses a risk to their overall health. It was similarly prescribed alongside significant lifestyle changes, as well. This, of course, includes changes to diet and exercise.

Contrave (Bupropion Hydrochloride – Naltrexone Hydrochloride)

Contrave is a combination drug that is used in the treatment of obesity. It contains Bupropion and Naltrexone. Both of these ingredients have shown weight loss results in users and seem to have significant results in those who use both as a combination.

Saxenda (Liraglutide)

This is a brand name form of the drug, Liraglutide. It is traditionally prescribed for type 2 diabetes but has also shown weight loss as a side effect. For this reason, it can be very helpful to obese individuals who also suffer with diabetes. Comorbidity rates are fairly high when it comes to obesity and diabetes, so it is great that there are drugs that can help to treat both while an individual is trying to get their health back in order.

phentermine helps to prepare for surgery

Phentermine Can Help Those Undergoing Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure that involves having the stomach divided into two sections so that permanent weight loss can be achieved. The small intestine is then split in two and connected to both halves of the stomach. This procedure results in a major reduction of overall stomach volume. The resulting upper stomach pouch is about the size of your thumb. This operation is only prescribed for individuals who are morbidly obese.

Gastric bypass surgery is used to treat conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. Weight loss is dramatic. Long term moralities rates can be reduced by over 40% after completing surgery. Gastric bypass surgery is prescribed for individuals who have failed to lose enough weight through diet and exercise alone. The success rate for those undergoing the procedure is improved if the individual has managed to change their diet and lose some weight prior to the procedure. Surgery is the best tool available to treat morbidly obese individuals and help them achieve permanent weight management goals and permanently change long-standing eating behavior.

Laparoscopy was first used for gastric bypass surgery in 1993.Over 200,000 bariatric procedures were completed in 2008. This number has been steadily rising as more surgeons are using laparoscopic procedures to perform the surgery. Laparoscopy is safer and the recovery time associated with the procedure is much shorter than an open procedure. It has the added benefits of reduced scarring, shortened hospital stay, reduced discomfort and less chance for a hernia to develop. It has steadily risen in popularity, even though gastric bypass is one of the most difficult procedures that can be done using laparoscopic means.

The gastric bypass procedure is easy to understand. A small pouch about the size of a thumb is sectioned off from the remaining large portion of the stomach. This is accomplished by placing staples between each half or by dividing the stomach completely in half. Both halves are then reconnected to the small intestines. Total division is preferred to ensure that the two halves of the stomach do not grow back together, thereby negating the benefits of the procedure.

After a gastric bypass procedure the size of the stomach is reduced by over 90%. Normal stomach volume can exceed 1000 ml. After surgery the stomach size is reduced to around 15 ml. The bypass pouch is formed from the upper part of the stomach that is least susceptible to stretching. This prevents it from stretching too much over time. Eventually the small intestine will be able to hold a larger volume of food. By the time that happens, weight loss will have been achieved. This allows the body to maintain the lower weight.

Once a very small amount of food has been ingested, the stomach pouch expands and sends signals to the brain to say that it is full. The patient feels as if he has eaten a lot of food, in reality he has eaten just a few bites. This feeling of fullness is typically followed by a feeling of satiety and a loss of appetite. If patients continues to eat after receiving these signals from the brain they may feel increasing discomfort or they may begin to vomit. It is important for those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery to eat 5-6 small meals each day. It is also very important that these patients do not “graze” all day long. Meals sizes start at ¼ to ½ cup per meal right after surgery and slowly increase to 1 cup per meal by the end of the first year. This requires a complete change in dietary behavior. If the dietary intake has been reduced prior to surgery this dramatic difference can be minimized.

Phentermine is a psycho-stimulant that is very similar in composition to an amphetamine.  It is used as a short term method to suppress appetite. It is prescribed to obese individuals, along with diet and exercise, to help reduce weight. This medication can be useful prior to gastric bypass surgery. It can help reduce the desire for food. This can help those about to undergo surgery by reducing caloric intake prior to the procedure. This can make the dramatic stomach capacity reduction feel less severe than it would if Phentermine had not been taken prior to the procedure.

Phentermine works by reducing the sense of hunger a person perceives. It also releases both epinephrine and norepinephrine which helps to break down the fat cells that are stored in the body fat. This helps the individual lose weight and reduces the feeling of hunger. Phentermine gives you energy and can be very useful for obtaining weight loss prior to surgery. After gastric bypass surgery Phentermine can be useful to offset physiological effects associated with the procedure. Depression often affects those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery. Diet limitations and low energy levels can make this condition worse. Phentermine can help increase energy levels and help alleviate some of these side effects.

Gastric Bypass surgery – long term health benefits

  • Over 70% of patients see an improvement in their blood pressure results. Blood pressure medications can usually be eliminated follow the procedure.
  • Sleep apnea can be cured and the incidence of snoring is greatly reduced or eliminated following a gastric bypass procedure.
  • Up to 90% of patients experience a complete reversal of type 2 diabetes. Medication for diabetes can typically be eliminated.
  • Pre-diabetics can decrease their chances of developing type 2 diabetes more than 30 times over that of those who have not had the procedure.
  • Almost all patients experience a relief in gastro-esophageal reflex disease.
  • Leg swelling associated with venous thrombolytic disease is often alleviated.
  • Lower back and joint pain are often improved or eliminated in almost all patients.
  • Mortality can be reduced by over 40%.
  • Life expectancy can be increased up to 15 years.
  • Phentermine taken prior to surgery can help alter eating habits and makes adjusting to the new stomach size easier for patients.
  • Phentermine can increase energy levels and help alleviate the feeling of low energy and resulting depression that can often follow gastric bypass surgery.
